The sub was running submerged until they were well away from territorial waters. A faint hum came through the steel decking, setting her teeth on edge. The air coming from overhead vents seemed fresh, but the walls and ceiling were tight. Ericka was not comfortable in confined spaces. Flaherty leaned over the medic’s shoulder, watching as she hooked their captive up for vital signs before turning to frown at him. “How much did you give him?”

Flaherty shrugged, looking unconcerned. “Probably too much, but I couldn’t have him waking up. He’s fast and a damned good fighter. Took Baird out before we knew there was any fight in him. Speaking of whom?”

The medic answered without pausing in her work. “The doc’s got him in the next room. Dinner through a straw for him for a while, but other than that, all good.”

Lewis stood in the doorway, Tim behind him in the passageway leaning on the bulkhead, brow knotted with a puzzled expression. Their prisoner lay on a gurney, his wrists shackled, still unconscious. He was tall, barrel-chested with heavy shoulders, black hair, trim beard shot with gray. Blood seeped through the white dressing covering the left half of his face, obscuring strong features. He wore dark fatigues and military boots.

Lewis addressed Flaherty. “Chief, any idea who he is?”

Flaherty shook his head in response. “No idea. It looked like he was trying to get the same shot as us. He was carrying a HK MP5, not a civvy version either. No ID. This may take a while.”

“Perhaps not.” They all turned to look at Tim.

Brows raised, Flaherty looked at Tim. “You got any guesses?”

Tim smiled as he squeezed past Lewis to peer at their captive’s face. “No, no guesses at all. Meet Colonel Yusef Abidi of the Pakistani ISI. Colonel, meet Private Flaherty.” The man on the table didn’t move, showing no sign of consciousness.

All chortled except Flaherty who scowled. “That’s not very fucking funny.”

Tim beamed at him, not intimidated. “I’m not joking. This is the man who handed us the asset who gave us the intel to be here in the first place.”

Flaherty’s face drained to pale under his tanned skin. “Shit, the paperwork for this is going to reach the ceiling.”
